Weltwärts

“Weltwärts” stands for “development policy commitment, global learning and encounters at eye level”; the aim is to create an intercultural exchange.

What is weltwärts?

“weltwärts” stands for “development policy commitment, global learning and encounters at eye level”; the aim is to create an intercultural exchange. “weltwärts” is a voluntary service with a focus on development policy, which is initiated and supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The VKII Ruhr District e. V. was recognized by the BMZ as a sending organization.

The voluntary service is intended to make young people aware of global dependencies and interactions and to understand them as processes that can be designed through their participation in weltwärts locations. The aim of the program is to have an impact beyond the period of voluntary service and to promote engagement in the development policy area in Germany.

Your contribution as a volunteer

A volunteer cannot provide qualified development assistance or “change the world”. This is also not the aim of voluntary service. Experience shows that voluntary services are less about measurable successes and measurable achievements. However, the volunteers can get to know other ways of life, go into exchange and, after a certain period of getting used to it, get involved on site, make a difference locally or on a small scale and have a variety of learning experiences themselves. These experiences have a lasting impact on volunteers and their view of the world for the rest of their lives.

From our perspective as a partner organization

· “weltwärts” contributes as an official government program to the appreciation of volunteer work worldwide,

· “weltwärts” enables longer-term and more effective support for the deployment sites,

· the aim of the voluntary services is to combine “learning and action”,

· A local placement or a local project receives support, appreciation and more visibility through the international interest and commitment of young volunteers.

In addition, the network of the placement site can be expanded by the partner organization and the volunteers, so that completely new contacts and opportunities can be opened up.

At the same time, experience shows that the program may benefit the volunteers as individuals more in the long term than the local people. Many returnees shape German society as multipliers – for intercultural exchange, tolerance and development policy connections. Commitment after return is one of the core goals of the “weltwärts” program.
